How to Calculate Flooring
To calculate how much flooring you need, multiply the room length by the room width to find the total floor area. Then add a waste allowance to account for cuts, offcuts, damaged pieces, pattern matching, and installation mistakes.
Fahahu automatically adds your selected waste percentage and can also estimate the number of flooring boxes or packs required when you enter the coverage per box.
Flooring Area Formula
For a rectangular or square room, use this simple formula:
Floor Area = Room Length × Room Width
Make sure all measurements use compatible units before multiplying. If you measure length and width in feet but thickness in inches, convert the thickness to feet first by dividing the number of inches by 12.
After calculating the room area, add your waste allowance to determine how much flooring you should purchase:
Flooring Required = Floor Area × (1 + Waste Percentage ÷ 100)
Flooring Calculation Example
Suppose you have a room that is 12 feet long and 10 feet wide.
First, calculate the floor area: 12 × 10 = 120 square feet.
If you add a 10% waste allowance, calculate the extra flooring: 120 × 10% = 12 square feet.
Add the waste allowance to the room area: 120 + 12 = 132 square feet.
You should therefore plan to purchase approximately 132 square feet of flooring. If each box covers 20 square feet, divide 132 by 20 to get 6.6 boxes. Since flooring is purchased in whole boxes, round up to 7 boxes.
How Much Extra Flooring Should I Buy?
Buying slightly more flooring than the exact room area helps account for cuts, offcuts, damaged pieces, installation mistakes, and future repairs. The amount of extra flooring you need depends on the room layout, flooring material, and installation pattern.
For many straightforward installations, a 5–10% waste allowance is a practical starting point. Rooms with unusual shapes, many corners, diagonal layouts, or complex patterns may require a higher allowance.
Common Flooring Waste Allowances
| Installation | Typical Waste | Notes |
| Simple rectangular room | 5–10% | Fewer cuts and obstacles |
| Room with several corners | 10% | More trimming and offcuts |
| Diagonal installation | 10–15% | Additional cuts are usually required |
| Complex patterns/layouts | 15%+ | Depends heavily on the design |
Note: These percentages are general estimating guidelines. Always check the flooring manufacturer’s installation recommendations and consider your specific room layout.
How Many Boxes of Flooring Do I Need?
Flooring is commonly sold in boxes or packs, with each package covering a specific number of square feet or square meters. You can usually find the coverage per box printed on the product packaging or listed in the product specifications.
To calculate the number of boxes you need, divide the total flooring required — including your waste allowance — by the coverage of one box. Always round the result up to the next whole box.
Flooring Box Formula
Boxes Required = Flooring Required ÷ Coverage per Box
For example, if you need 132 square feet of flooring and each box covers 20 square feet, the calculation is 132 ÷ 20 = 6.6. Round up to the next whole box, so you would need 7 boxes.
Flooring Calculator FAQs
How do I calculate how much flooring I need?
Multiply the room length by the room width to calculate the floor area. Then add a waste allowance to determine the total amount of flooring you should purchase.
How much extra flooring should I buy?
For many straightforward installations, 5–10% extra is a practical starting point. More complex room shapes, diagonal installations, or patterned layouts may require additional material.
Should I include waste when calculating flooring?
Yes. A waste allowance helps account for cuts, offcuts, damaged pieces, and installation mistakes. The appropriate percentage depends on the flooring type and layout.
How do I calculate how many boxes of flooring I need?
Divide the total flooring required, including waste, by the coverage per box. If the result contains a fraction, round up to the next whole box.
Can I calculate flooring in square meters?
Yes. Select Metric in the calculator to enter the room dimensions in meters. The result will be displayed in square meters.
Does the calculator work for laminate, vinyl, hardwood, and tile?
Yes. The area calculation can be used for many flooring materials, including laminate, vinyl, hardwood, engineered wood, and tile. However, waste requirements and package coverage can vary by material, product, and installation pattern.
