Room Paint Calculator
Enter your room dimensions, number of coats, paint coverage, and any doors or windows to estimate how much paint you need.
Coverage varies by paint, surface, texture, and manufacturer. Use the coverage stated on your paint can whenever possible.
Your Estimate
Paint Required
Estimate includes four walls only.
How to Calculate Paint
To estimate how much paint you need, first calculate the total surface area of the walls you plan to paint. For a rectangular room, add the room length and width, multiply by two, and then multiply by the wall height. If you are painting the ceiling, add the ceiling area as well.
Subtract the area of doors, windows, or other surfaces that will not be painted. Then multiply the remaining paintable area by the number of coats and divide it by the coverage rate of your paint. Fahahu performs these calculations automatically and provides the estimated amount of paint required.
Paint Calculation Formula
For a rectangular room, calculate the total area of the four walls using:
Wall Area = 2 × (Room Length + Room Width) × Wall Height
If you are painting the ceiling, calculate its area separately:
Ceiling Area = Room Length × Room Width
After subtracting doors, windows, and other areas that will not be painted, calculate the total coverage needed for all coats:
Paint Required = Total Paint Area ÷ Paint Coverage
Paint Calculation Example
Suppose you have a room that is 12 feet long, 10 feet wide, and 8 feet high, and you want to apply 2 coats of paint.
First, calculate the area of the four walls: 2 × (12 + 10) × 8 = 352 square feet.
For two coats, multiply the wall area by 2: 352 × 2 = 704 square feet of total paint coverage.
If your paint covers approximately 350 square feet per gallon, divide the total coverage by the paint coverage rate: 704 ÷ 350 = 2.01 gallons.
You would therefore need approximately 2.01 gallons of paint based on the stated coverage. In practice, paint is sold in specific container sizes, so purchase enough paint to cover the calculated requirement and check the manufacturer’s stated coverage.
How Many Coats of Paint Do I Need?
The number of coats required depends on the existing wall color, the new paint color, surface condition, paint quality, and whether primer is being used. Many interior painting projects use two coats for consistent color and coverage.
A single coat may be sufficient when refreshing a similar color on a well-prepared surface, while significant color changes, porous surfaces, or difficult-to-cover colors may require additional coats or a suitable primer.
Common Paint Coat Guidelines
| Situation | Typical Coats | Notes |
| Similar color refresh | 1–2 | Depends on existing condition and paint coverage |
| Standard interior repaint | 2 | Common starting point for even coverage |
| Major color change | 2+ | Primer may also be helpful |
| New or porous surface | Varies | Surface preparation and primer can affect requirements |
Note: These are general estimating guidelines. Always follow the paint manufacturer’s application and coverage recommendations for the specific product and surface.
How Much Area Does a Gallon of Paint Cover?
Paint coverage varies by product, surface texture, application method, and manufacturer. Many paints provide an estimated coverage range on the container or product specifications. For the most accurate estimate, enter the coverage stated by the manufacturer into the calculator above.
Our calculator uses 350 square feet per gallon as the default Imperial coverage and 10 square meters per liter as the default Metric coverage. You can replace these values with the coverage listed for the paint you plan to use.
Why Paint Coverage Can Vary
Rough or porous surfaces can absorb more paint than smooth, previously painted surfaces. Application method, paint type, surface preparation, and color changes can also affect the actual amount required. Treat calculator results as an estimate and allow for the conditions of your specific project.
Paint Calculator FAQs
How do I calculate how much paint I need?
Calculate the total area of the walls you plan to paint, subtract doors, windows, and other areas that will not be painted, multiply by the number of coats, and divide by the paint’s coverage rate.
How much paint do I need for two coats?
Calculate the net paintable area and multiply it by 2. Then divide that total area by the coverage rate of your paint. The calculator above performs this automatically when you select two coats.
Should I subtract doors and windows when calculating paint?
Yes, you can subtract the area of doors and windows that will not be painted. For a quick estimate, some people leave small openings in the calculation to provide a little extra paint, but larger openings can meaningfully affect the estimate.
How much area does one gallon of paint cover?
Coverage varies by paint and surface. The Fahahu calculator uses 350 square feet per gallon as its default, but you should enter the coverage stated by your paint manufacturer whenever available.
Does the calculator include the ceiling?
The ceiling is optional. Select Include ceiling in the estimate if you plan to paint it. The calculator will add the room’s length × width to the paintable area.
Can I calculate paint in liters?
Yes. Select Metric / Liters to enter room dimensions in meters and paint coverage in square meters per liter. The estimated paint requirement will be displayed in liters.
