Roofing Calculator
Calculate how much roofing material you need based on your roof dimensions and pitch. Estimate roof area, waste allowance, roofing squares, and approximate shingle bundles for your project.
Roofing Calculator
Enter the dimensions and pitch of a simple gable roof to estimate roof area, waste allowance, roofing squares, and shingle bundles.
This calculator is designed for a simple rectangular gable roof. In Imperial mode, a 6/12 pitch means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run.

How to Calculate Roofing
A roofing calculator helps estimate the total surface area of a roof based on its length, width, and pitch. Because a sloped roof has more surface area than the building footprint below it, the roof pitch must be included when calculating the amount of roofing material required.
This calculator also includes an optional waste allowance to account for cuts, overlaps, damaged materials, and installation waste. The final estimate is converted into roofing squares and approximate shingle bundles to help you plan how much material to purchase.
Roofing Calculator Formula
The basic roof area calculation starts with the building footprint and then adjusts that area using the roof pitch factor.
Roof Area = Length × Width × Pitch Factor
Roof Area with Waste = Roof Area × (1 + Waste Percentage ÷ 100)
Roofing Squares = Roof Area in Square Feet ÷ 100
One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof area. The number of shingle bundles required depends on the product, but many standard asphalt shingles use approximately three bundles per roofing square.
Roofing Calculation Example
Suppose you have a simple gable roof that is 40 feet long and 30 feet wide with a 6/12 pitch. The pitch factor for a 6/12 roof is approximately 1.118.
40 × 30 × 1.118 = 1,341.6 square feet
With a 10% waste allowance:
1,341.6 × 1.10 = 1,475.8 square feet
Since one roofing square equals 100 square feet:
1,475.8 ÷ 100 = 14.76 roofing squares
If the shingles require three bundles per roofing square, you would need approximately 45 bundles after rounding up to whole bundles.
How Roof Pitch Affects Roofing Area
Roof pitch describes how steep a roof is. In the imperial system, pitch is commonly expressed as the number of inches the roof rises for every 12 inches of horizontal run. For example, a 6/12 roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of run.
As the roof becomes steeper, its actual surface area increases even when the building length and width remain the same. The calculator applies a pitch factor to the building footprint to account for this additional roof surface.
3/12 pitch: approximately 1.031 4/12 pitch: approximately 1.054 5/12 pitch: approximately 1.083 6/12 pitch: approximately 1.118 8/12 pitch: approximately 1.202 10/12 pitch: approximately 1.302 12/12 pitch: approximately 1.414
If you are unsure of your roof pitch, measure it carefully before estimating materials, as an incorrect pitch can significantly affect the total roofing area.
How Much Extra Roofing Material Should You Add for Waste?
Roofing projects normally require more material than the calculated roof area. Extra material helps account for cuts, overlaps, damaged shingles, starter areas, and other installation waste.
A 10% waste allowance is a common starting point for a simple gable roof. Roofs with valleys, hips, dormers, multiple sections, or complex layouts may require a higher waste allowance.
Typical waste allowances:
Complex roof with multiple valleys and hips: 15–20% or more
Simple gable roof: 10%
Moderately complex roof: 10–15%
These percentages are general estimating guidelines. Actual material requirements can vary depending on the roof design, roofing product, installation method, and manufacturer recommendations.
How Many Shingle Bundles Do I Need?
Roofing shingles are commonly sold in bundles rather than by individual shingles. The number of bundles needed depends on the roof area and how many bundles the selected roofing product requires to cover one roofing square.
One roofing square equals 100 square feet. Many standard asphalt shingle products require approximately 3 bundles per roofing square, although coverage can vary by manufacturer and product.
Shingle Bundles = Roofing Squares × Bundles per Square
For a roof requiring 14.76 roofing squares and shingles packaged at 3 bundles per square:
14.76 × 3 = 44.28 bundles
Since you cannot normally purchase a fraction of a bundle, round up to 45 bundles.
Always check the coverage information provided by the shingle manufacturer before purchasing materials. You can change the Shingle Bundles per Roofing Square value in the calculator to match your specific product.
Roofing Calculator FAQs
How do I calculate the square footage of a roof?
Multiply the roof length by the roof width to find the building footprint, then multiply that area by the appropriate roof pitch factor. For a simple gable roof, this gives an estimate of the actual sloped roof surface area.
What is a roofing square?
A roofing square is a standard roofing measurement equal to 100 square feet of roof area. Roofing materials such as shingles are often estimated and sold based on the number of roofing squares required.
How many bundles of shingles are in a roofing square?
Many standard asphalt shingles require approximately 3 bundles to cover one roofing square, but this can vary by product. Always check the manufacturer’s coverage information for the shingles you plan to use.
How much waste should I add when calculating roofing materials?
A 10% waste allowance is commonly used for simple roofs. More complicated roofs with hips, valleys, dormers, or multiple sections may require 15–20% or more.
Does roof pitch affect square footage?
Yes. A steeper roof has a larger surface area than a flatter roof covering the same building footprint. The calculator uses the roof pitch to determine a pitch factor and adjust the estimated roof area accordingly.
Can I use this calculator for metric measurements?
Yes. Select Metric / Degrees to enter the roof length and width in meters and the roof angle in degrees. The calculator will return the primary roof area in square meters while still calculating roofing squares and shingle bundles.
Can I use this calculator for complex roofs?
This calculator is designed primarily for a simple rectangular gable roof. For roofs with multiple sections, hips, valleys, dormers, or other complex features, calculate individual roof sections where appropriate and consider consulting a roofing professional for a more precise material estimate.
