How to Calculate a Time Difference

Compare two locations without manually working out UTC offsets or daylight saving changes.

1

Choose Two Locations

Enter two major cities or supported IANA time zones you want to compare.

2

Calculate the Difference

Fahahu compares their current UTC offsets and determines how far ahead or behind one location is.

3

Compare the Day

Use the comparison table to see how hours in one location correspond with local times in the other.

Compare Time Differences Around the World

Fahahu’s Time Difference Calculator shows the current time difference between two cities or time zones. This can make it easier to schedule international calls, coordinate remote teams, plan travel, attend online events or contact people in other parts of the world.

Instead of manually adding or subtracting hours, select the two locations you want to compare. The calculator displays their live local times, dates, UTC offsets and current difference.

Why Can a Time Difference Change?

The time difference between two cities is not necessarily constant throughout the year. Some regions observe daylight saving time while others do not, and countries may change their clocks on different dates.

For example, one location may move its clocks forward for part of the year while another location keeps the same UTC offset year-round. This can temporarily increase or decrease the difference between them.

Understanding UTC Offsets

A UTC offset describes how far a local time is ahead of or behind Coordinated Universal Time. A location at UTC+5 is five hours ahead of UTC, while a location at UTC−4 is four hours behind UTC.

This calculator uses time-zone information available through your browser rather than assuming that every location has a permanently fixed UTC offset.

Time Difference FAQs

How do I calculate the time difference between two cities?

Select the two cities or time zones above. Fahahu compares their current UTC offsets and shows how many hours and minutes one location is ahead of or behind the other.

Does the calculator account for daylight saving time?

The calculator uses IANA time-zone information supported by the visitor’s browser, allowing applicable daylight saving changes to be reflected in the current time difference.

Why does the time difference between countries sometimes change?

Countries and regions do not all use daylight saving time, and those that do may change their clocks on different dates. As a result, the difference between two locations can change during the year.

Can two locations have a difference that includes 30 or 45 minutes?

Yes. Not every time zone differs from UTC by a whole number of hours. Some locations use offsets containing 30 or 45 minutes, and the calculator accounts for these differences.

Can I use 24-hour time?

Yes. Use the 12 HR and 24 HR controls at the top of the calculator to change the displayed time format.
